Expression of Condolences about Honorary Knight Univ. Prof. JUDr. Jiří Toman, Ph.D.
It is our sad duty to inform about the passing away of our Honorary Knight, Univ. Prof. JUDr. Jiří Toman, Ph.D. Jiří has been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus during the last weeks and died on Monday morning (April 20th, 2020).
Jiří Toman was born in Prague in 1938 and studied law at the Charles University in Prague from 1956 to 1961, where he also received his doctorate in 1966. He then worked as a lecturer at various Prague universities until 1970. At the same time, from 1965 to 1970 he studied at the Geneva Institute of International Studies. In 1981, he obtained his doctorate in political science from the University of Geneva.
From 1969 to 1972 he was a research assistant at the Geneva Henry Dunant Institute, the research, information and training centre of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. He then worked there until 1979 as Research Director, from 1979 to 1992 as Deputy Director and from 1992 to 1998 as Director. In addition, he was an advisor to several United Nations organizations in the 1980s, including the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) from 1983 to 1988 and the United Nations Disaster Relief and Works Agency (UNDRO) from 1985 to 1986. From 1998 to 2018, he was a professor in the Faculty of Law at Santa Clara University. He then worked for the Danube University Krems as a visiting professor at the Department of Construction and Environment. Here he played a decisive role in the development of the Centre for the Protection of Cultural Property.
Our Knight of Honour was very closely connected with the archducal house and also with our Grand Master. With him we have lost not only a highly respected personality, but above all a true friend and supporter of our Order.
